Do you love your blogging career, but think that driving website traffic to the blog (as you must do) is b-o-r-i-n-g? Let me tell you--it doesn't have to be that way. There is a way of driving website traffic to your blog that is, believe it or not, fun. It's called social networking. With social networking, you use sites like Digg, Twitter, and even Facebook to make people interested in seeing what you have to say. You don't "sell", you just network.
Many people are familiar with how Digg works. You set up a free account, then you "digg" links that you find interesting (in the case of your blog, it's your latest blog post) for all other Digg members to find. You include a title and summary, then to see the whole thing members have to click the link. You can also become friends with people on Digg.
These friends will always know when you have made a new digg and they are likely to come pay it a visit. You can and should do the same with them. Many people think that Digg is really for sharing interesting news and journalism, but you can share anything there---including videos.
Twitter has arisen within the last year or two. Twitter is a "micro-blogging" site, as it allows you to make individual "tweets" (posts) only up to 140 characters (yes, characters, not words). You are supposed to be concise, obviously.
You can follow people on Twitter, and they can follow you. When someone on Twitter is following someone else, the person's ID is made available in their (the follower's) profile, so that they can easily and quickly access their profile. They can direct message anyone who is following them, too.
But for those you follow, every tweet they make gets archived, in order, on your home page. The date and time of the tweet are always displayed, too. You can probably see where this service enables a a great deal of communication with a great deal of people on a regular basis. Some people have tens of thousands of followers on Twitter.
If you use Twitter for driving website traffic to your blog, you want to use a "passive" strategy. You should not sell with your tweets. Instead, you just tweet about a latest update to your career or personal life. It can be funny or informative, but should not be a sales pitch.
You can include the information for how to get to your blog in your profile. Make your tweets interesting and entertaining and people will check you out and visit you. You should include a photograph in your profile, and you should not tweet more than five times a day so that you don't get thought of as a spammer.
Facebook has become the ultimate social networking site. Here you find old friends and make new ones. There are groups to join, virtual drinks to send, and ways of looking people up by many different criteria, including high school attended, region, country, name, etc. You would include your blog link in your profile. Then, just start having fun chatting it up with people!
With Facebook, there are many different ways of communicating with people which can get you new friends who will visit your blog. You can use Facebook e-mail; Facebook IM; write on your Wall and on friends' Walls (there's also a Wall-to-Wall feature); and use crazy things like "Super Poke" and a vast array of other fun methods of making contact. You can probably already see the great potential for making friends who will be happy to visit your blog. Just keep everything fun and tasteful in your communications.
Just remember that driving traffic to your blog does not have to be boring or tedious. You can have a great time on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and other social networking sites and get all the traffic you need.
